Charley Houston Creel

Charley Houston Creel peacefully passed away in Baton Rouge on August 24th at the age of 90. Born on September 27, 1932 in Franklinton, Louisiana, Charley graduated from Southeastern University and was drafted into service in the Army during the Korean War. Following his Army service, Charley moved to Baton Rouge where he worked for BASF for more than 40 years. He attended church at Cedarcrest Baptist, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for decades. While Charley spent most of his adult life in Baton Rouge, Creel Hill in Franklinton was always home. From planting watermelons to raising beef cows, weekends were spent at the farm. As a family, Washington Parish will always be home. Charley was an avid LSU sports fan with season tickets to Tigers football, basketball, and baseball for decades. We are grateful he was able to attend a game at the Box this season and to see the Tigers win the College World Series which brought him immeasurable joy. Family was the center of Charley’s life. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Sharron Brock Creel, his children and their spouses Charlene Blevins and Matthew Blevins, Belinda Davis and Daniel Davis, Stacy Creel and Sergio Chavez, and David Creel, and his 9 grandchildren Matthew Blevins and Amy Burcham, Ryan Blevins, Eli Davis, Cooper Davis, Luke Davis, Joaquin Chavez, Alicia Chavez, Houston Creel, and Carson Creel. He is also survived by his sister Helen Welch and a brother in law Fred Hoggatt. Charley had numerous nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents Houston Creel and Eula Walters Creel, his sister Josie Hoggatt, and his brother in law Gerald Welch. The family is incredibly grateful to Kathleen Roy his home health aide for many years and Hospice of Baton Rouge for helping the family ensure that Charley was able to pass peacefully in his daughter’s home. Visitation will be at Bethel Baptist Church (42592 Bethel Road, Franklinton, LA 70438) on Monday August 28th from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm. A funeral service will be held in the church at 2:30 pm Monday with Rev. Rick Cook officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
