Gladys Salloum Newman

Gladys Salloum Newman, 87, of Franklinton, La passed away November 13, 2009. Gladys was born and raised in Gulfport, MS. She was a graduate of Gulfport High School where she received an accolade for twelve years of perfect attendance and also attended Carrâ€™s Business School. Gladys worked at Keesler Air Force Base and Edgewater Hotel before marrying Holyne Newman and moving to Franklinton, La where they opened Newmanâ€™s Clothing Store and raised three children. She was extremely caring, thoughtful and was always there for her dear friends in Franklinton. She was a charter member of the Franklinton Womenâ€™s Club, Franklinton Country Club, Ladies Golf Association, and was an avid golfer scoring two hole in ones. She was a founding member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society of Holy Family. Gladys was presented a Papal Blessing from the Vatican and was awarded Mother of the Year through her church in 1967. She volunteered with the Washington Parish Fair Association for many years and played an instrumental role in the Centennial Celebration of the town of Franklinton. She was a scout leader for the Girl and Boy Scouts and volunteered with March of Dimes and American Cancer Society. Gladys touched everyone she encountered with kindness and tenderness. She always lived up to her motto, â€œPut your faith first and be a good Christian, be honest and love God, family and friends.â€쳌 She is preceded in death by her husband, Holyne Newman; daughter, Cynthia Gail Newman Muldrey; parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Salloum; sisters, Evelyn Antoon, Georgia Bertucci, Sadie Hage, Melvina LaCroix and brother, Edmond Salloum, Sr. She is survived by her daughter Sandra Newman Elias and husband Louis of Long Beach, MS; son, Greg Newman and wife Jackie of Mandeville, La; son-in-law, Barry John Muldrey, Sr. of Metairie, La.; sister, Gloria Newman of New Orleans, La; brothers, Kaleel Salloum, Sr. and wife Barbara of Gulfport, MS, Ellis Salloum, Sr. and wife Sandra of Jackson, MS; brothers-in-law, Dr. Philip Hage, Sr. and Bert Bertucci, Sr. and sister-in-law, Rita Salloum, all of Gulfport, MS and many loving nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she profoundly loved, Louis Newman Elias, his wife Amy and two children Louis Tripp and Tucker Newman, Christi Lyn Elias, Eve Marie Elias, Matthew Ryan Elias and wife Christy, Barry John Muldrey, Jr., Hal Newman, Joseph Newman and Samuel Newman. We are all so blessed to have had Gladys Salloum Newman in our lives. She will forever be in our hearts and we know she is now with our Heavenly Father. The family wishes to thank the Dixie White House Nursing Facility Staff in Pass Christian, MS, Mrs. Paulette Dawkins, NP, and Dr. Tom Blanks, for their kind care. A Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Franklinton, La. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until mass time. Interment will be in Ellis Cemetery, Franklinton. Pallbearers will be Bert Bertucci, Jr., Ron Elias, Philip Hage, Jr., Barry John Muldrey, Sr., Edmond Salloum, Jr., Dr. George Salloum, Kaleel Salloum, Jr., and Gary Solomon, Sr. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Mrs. George Salloum Charity Trust Fund, P.O. Box 1717, Gulfport, MS 39502.
